On September 12, 2016—the first day of our new semester—the Office of International & Cross-Strait Academic Exchange held its Welcome Party for Exchange Students at 6 PM at the Waishuanghsi Campus, celebrating the beginning of the new exchange students’ study at SU. Many staff members of our university gave a warm welcome to the more than 350 exchange students from 18 countries. President Wei-Ta Pan, Dean of the Office of General Affairs Prof. Jin-Xiang Ruan, and Director of Cross-Strait Affairs Center Ms. Yu-Mei Wang also expressed their hope that all exchange students could focus on professional knowledge while still finding time to experience Taiwan’s traditional festivals.
With the Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, the hosts dressed up as a jade rabbit and a pomelo, which caught everyone’s eyes. Volunteers combined Taiwanese delicacies with the Pokemon GO phenomenon to devise a “Yes or No” game to test everyone’s knowledge of current events. The Rolling Ball game brought the event to a climax, symbolizing the beginning of the exchange students’ journey.
During the final part of the Welcome Party, the Office of International Affairs provided food, and President Pan presented everyone with moon cakes. He described his hope that all exchange students could feel a warm welcome from Soochow University. Almost 400 students interacted with one another during the dining portion of the festivities.
Most initial communication with prospective students begins on the Internet, so finally having the opportunity for great conversations face-to-face definitely made for a good ending for this event. Moreover, it helps set the stage for a great semester for all of SU’s incoming overseas students.
